Miyashita Park: Shibuya's Rooftop Park, Skate Spot, and Shopping Complex
Opened in July 2020 on the site of the old Miyashita Park, this redevelopment project wedged a 330-meter-long rooftop park, a four-story shopping complex, a hotel, and a skateboard park into a single block just north of Shibuya Station. The result is one of the more useful pieces of urban planning Tokyo has produced in recent years, a place where you can eat, shop, sleep, and watch someone kickflip all within a few hundred meters of each other.
The Rooftop Park
The park sits on the roof of the shopping complex, accessible by escalator from the ground level. It is divided into several zones including a turf lawn for picnics, a bouldering wall, a dog run, and a skatepark designed in collaboration with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics organizing committee. The skatepark, operated by the brand Miyashita Park Skate Park, charges around 1,500 JPY for a two-hour session and rents boards and protective gear. The park also has a small stage used for live music events and a cluster of benches with free public Wi-Fi.
The park is open from 5:00 to 23:00, and the grass fills up quickly on weekends with locals eating bentos and drinking convenience store beer. The design incorporates a lot of greenery, with cherry trees planted along the eastern edge that bloom in late March and early April.
Shopping and Dining
The shopping complex below, called Rayard Miyashita Park, has roughly 90 tenants spread across four floors. The lineup skews toward lifestyle and streetwear brands, with stores including Shibuya Parco-adjacent labels, a large Uniqlo, and several Japanese craft and design shops. The dining floor on the ground level has a row of restaurants serving everything from tonkatsu to Neapolitan pizza, and many stay open late. The complex also houses a branch of the Tsutaya bookstore chain with a large English-language selection.
The hotel component, Sequence Miyashita Park, occupies the upper floors of the tower section and is operated by the Mirai Group. It targets younger travelers with small but well-designed rooms, a co-working lounge, and a rooftop bar that overlooks the park.
