This August, the rooftop of Tokyu Plaza Harajuku "Harakado" turns into something Tokyo has never seen before: KAWAII Yoichi vol.1 — Harajuku KAWAII Night Market (原宿可愛夜市). Running August 20–30, 2026, the 11-day event is the first time Harajuku's cute culture has been reworked into a full night festival. The concept line says it all: "the night festival the world falls in love with — Japan's KAWAII."
The event is produced with the KAWAII LAB. idol project and its character brand KAWAII FRIENDS, which appears across the venue — at carnival booths, photo spots, and on limited-edition goods. The hook is the seven colored tags: on entry, every visitor picks one, and that choice drives the light and sound installations around you. In other words, you pick your KAWAII, and the venue reacts.
Two sessions, two moods
The day session (11:00–18:30, last entry 18:00) is free entry and family-friendly — KAWAII food, daytime photo spots and a softer atmosphere. The night session (19:00–22:00, last entry 21:30) is ticketed and where the event's identity kicks in: lantern illuminations, the Kawarabu Ennichi carnival, and the goods store with event-only items. Tickets went on sale July 14, 2026, at kawaii-yoichi.com — early-bird ¥1,300, advance ¥1,500, day-of ¥1,600 (the "KAWAII Charge Passport"). Note the 18:30–19:00 changeover closes the venue briefly between sessions.
What to do: Kawarabu Ennichi and KAWAII FRIENDS
The Kawarabu Ennichi is the festival's take on a traditional Japanese carnival, reimagined in KAWAII LAB. style: shooting gallery (射的), ring toss (輪投げ) and similar games, all dressed in the KAWAII FRIENDS world. KAWAII food and drinks are designed to look as good as they taste — the photogenic sort you will see all over Instagram. The goods store sells event-only KAWAII Yoichi items plus the wider KAWAII FRIENDS line.
Plan around two closed days
The event is closed entirely on August 28 (Fri), and on the final day August 30 (Sun) it closes early at 18:00 (no night session that day). The biggest wildcard is timing: the final weekend (Aug 29–30) overlaps with Harajuku Omotesando Genki-sai Super Yosakoi, one of Tokyo's largest yosakoi dance festivals, which closes the road from Meiji Shrine to Yoyogi Park. If you want a calmer KAWAII Yoichi visit, aim for a weekday (Aug 20–27). If you want to see both in one trip, plan for Aug 29–30 and expect Harajuku to be at its summer peak.
Getting there
The closest station is Meiji-jingumae (Harajuku) on the Fukutoshin and Chiyoda lines — a 1-minute walk to Harakado. JR Harajuku Station is also close. Avoid Shibuya Station unless you are combining the visit with a Shibuya stop — it is a 10-minute walk and adds nothing on a crowded summer weekend.
