神ノ池

Kami-no-ike, or the Upper Pond, is the centrepiece of the Japanese-style garden within Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Lying in the Shibuya-ward portion of the grounds near the Sendagaya entrance, the pond is framed by carefully pruned pines, arched bridges and traditional tea houses that together create one of Tokyo's most picturesque waterside landscapes. At one end of the pond stands the Kyugoryotei, also known as the Taiwan Pavilion, a Chinese-influenced building donated in 1927 by the Japanese community in Taiwan to commemorate the then Crown Prince Hirohito's wedding. Mandarin ducks can often be seen gliding across the water, adding to the tranquillity that feels remarkably distant from the surrounding metropolis. Shinjuku Gyoen is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a modest admission charge, and is closed on Mondays. The nearest access points are the Sendagaya Gate from Sendagaya Station or the Okido Gate from Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station. Early morning and late autumn, when the maples turn, are particularly rewarding times to visit.
