渋谷川源流

Shibuyagawa Genryu, or the source of the Shibuya River, refers to the spring-fed headwaters located in the Sendagaya area of Shibuya ward. The Shibuya River is one of central Tokyo's most storied watercourses, flowing roughly 2.6 kilometres from its upper reaches near Shinjuku Gyoen through the heart of Shibuya and onward to Tokyo Bay, where it becomes the Furu River. Historically, the river drew from multiple springs and tributaries, including the now-submerged Yudagawa and Kohonegawa streams, which once ran openly through what are now densely built-up neighbourhoods. The source area around Sendagaya sits at a higher elevation, and the water that emerges here ultimately passes beneath iconic Shibuya landmarks before reaching the sea — a journey most Tokyo residents traverse daily without realising the river flows beneath their feet. The source area itself is modest and largely unmarked, known more to urban-hydrology enthusiasts than casual tourists. Those interested in tracing the river's path can follow walking routes that wind from the upper springs down through Shibuya's revitalised riverside areas, including the Cerulean Tower stretch near the station, offering a fascinating perspective on how water has shaped the city.
