Dalian

Dalian - formally known as Dalian Gyoza Base - is a Chinese restaurant on the third floor of the Shibuya Stream complex, specialising in handmade dumplings and authentic hot-pot dishes. The branch traces its roots to Yokohama's Chinatown, and that heritage shows in the menu's emphasis on proper, no-compromise 'gachi' Chinese cooking rather than the Japanised versions found at many local Chinese spots. The star attraction is the signature Dalian gyoza, each one folded by hand by a dim-sum chef trained in the Chinese tradition. Fried to a crisp golden base with delicate wings of batter at the edges, they are juicy inside and best ordered by the plateful to share. Beyond the dumplings, the kitchen turns out an impressive range of stir-fries, steamed dim sum and the bubbling hot pot that is a favourite for group dining - the round tables are set up with built-in induction hobs for exactly this purpose. Shibuya Stream is directly connected to Shibuya Station's new south exit, and the restaurant is a short lift ride up to the third floor. Reservations are advisable for dinner, especially on Fridays and Saturdays when the hot-pot tables fill quickly. The atmosphere is convivial and loud in the best way, making it ideal for a group meal rather than a quiet dinner for two.
