A serene Japanese-style garden within Shinjuku Gyoen, offering a traditional landscape of ponds, stone lanterns and winding paths.

The Japanese Garden at 6 Chome Sendagaya lies within Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, one of Tokyo's most beloved green spaces. This section, accessed via the Sendagaya Gate near JR Sendagaya Station, showcases a classically composed Japanese landscape with a curved pond, carefully placed stones, stone lanterns and winding paths through manicured plantings.

Shinjuku Gyoen as a whole blends three distinct garden styles: Japanese, English and French. The Japanese Garden is the oldest and most contemplative of the three, designed around a tranquil pond whose shoreline is softened by irises in early summer and fiery maples in autumn. It is a favourite spot for visitors seeking a quiet moment away from the surrounding city.

The garden is open from 9:00 to 16:30 (extended to 17:00 in summer) and closed on Mondays. A modest admission fee applies. The Sendagaya Gate entrance is roughly five minutes on foot from Sendagaya Station on the JR Sobu Line, making it a convenient detour from the Shibuya area.
